State of the Zoo Industry
Dwindling interest means zoos across the country are facing financial difficulties. Binghamton, New York’s floundering Ross Park Zoo, whose director recently exploited animals for a California television appearance (including a baby chimpanzee who had been traumatically pulled from her mother), asked the United Way to bail it out. Fewer people are visiting the San Diego Zoo, Houston Zoo, Blank Park Zoo, National Zoo, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Colorado's Ocean Journey, Kansas City Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, Topeka Zoo, Phoenix Zoo, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Mesker Park Zoo, and in fact, attendance is down 3 percent at zoos across the country. Taxpayers are being tapped to provide subsidies to the Dallas Zoo, The Florida Aquarium, the Lowry Park Zoo, and the Hogle Zoo.
